Endoscopic Observation of Various Gastric Diseases following Staining with Congo-red

Abstract
Endoscopic dye examinations using congo-red and AOC-tetragastrin were carried out in 118 cases, including 6 cases of endoscopically normal person and 112 cases of various gastric diseases diagnosed in the Department of Internal Medicine. at Hanyang University Hospital.
The results obtained were summerized as followings;
1. Endoscopic observation of glandular borders revealed diffuse stained area after congo-red staining in 41 cases (35 %) , partial stained area in 71 cases(60%) and undifferentiated area in 6 cases (5%) among 118 cases. In open type partial staining was remarkable.
2. Endoscopic diagnoses were compared with histological findings of biopsy specimen collected from areas in the vicinity of the glandular borders. Diagnoses made by the two procedures were in accord with in 37 cases (93.5 % ) out of 40 cases in pyloric glandular site and in 33 cases (94.2%) out of 35 cases in fundic glandular area, being over-all agreement of 70 cases (93.3%) out of 75 cases examined.
3. The types of glandular borders identified by endoscopic examination appeared to be changed with age. While the closed type was commonly observed. in youth, the open type was seen mostly in middle age group.
4. A characteristic feature was observed between the type of glandular borderss and gastric diseases: 03 type was seen most commonly in atrophic gastritis, and Co and C2 type in superficial gastritis, and Co and Cl type in gastric ulcer.
5. It was found considerable relationship between the types of glandular borders and gastric acidity. Both basal gastric acidity and maximal acidity after stimulating with AOC-tetragastrin were observed to be markedly higher in. the closed type than in the open type.
